A model for a CT dose profile in a standard PMMA head phantom

Abstract

Purpose: This work present a model for the dose profile deposited in a standard phantom of 16 cm of diameter and 15 cm of length (manufactured with "polymethyl methacrylate" - PMMA) in a CT or computed tomography.

Method: The model proposed is based on error and gaussian functions, where the most of parameters used has a simple physics justification. The data used for the development of this model have been obtained with a solid state probe.

Results and discussion: A good approach has been found to the experimental data with the proposed model, besides being of great versatility since a great variety of experimental measures have been used, with different equipment and acquisition parameters.

Conclusions: Our model adjust very well the deposition profiles of doses on a head phantom in its central axis. It can be considered as a basis for carrying out experimental corrections, dosimetric determinations and other considerations that require a theoretical dose profile model.
